THE PASSAGE OF TIME

Since prehistoric times, people realized the beneficial properties of honey as it was used very often in their diet, even though for many centuries it was the only known sweetener. The bee appeared on our planet in the Tertiary period at the beginning of the Cenozoic era, i.e. 65 million years ago, long before the appearance of man. Assuming that along with bees honey was discovered. We can conclude with certainty that between then and circa 16th century AD, honey was the only confectionary and non-prepared food known at that time. In Greek mythology the gods of Olympus, were allegedly feeding on nectar and ambrosia.

The existence of beekeeping industry is confirmed before the Aristotelian period, during which time beekeeping had already been well established, because the intelligentsia of that era were well aware of the beneficial properties of honey. The father of Medicine, Hippocrates recommended honey to all, particularly to people suffering from poor health.

Several scripts that refer to honey or bees have been found by numerous writers such as Homer, Hippocrates, Democritus, Xenophon, Pythagoras and of course Aristotle.

Natural honey was eaten in their daily diet, used in cooking and other food preparations. Evidence exists about the use of and variations of honey for the following:

Milomelo: Apples preserved in honey throughout the year. Honey acquires the characteristic aroma of apples. Other fruits are also preserved in the same way.

Melikraton: Honey with milk food for the children.

Oxymelo: Honey and vinegar for the treatment of fever.

Mead: Liqueur obtained by alcoholic fermentation of honey.

Oinomelo: Honey and wine. It is Stated that Democritus lived to an old age because he consumed Oinomelo with bread.

However, honey is also mentioned in history as an important ingredient for the care and treatment of skin as well as hair. We must not forget that Cleopatra bathed in a mixture of honey and milk. Emperor Nero's wife often used a lotion made of honey and milk on her face and body, which appeared to ensure freshness and youthfulness. Around 1800, honey started being used as a major ingredient in many popular cosmetics. Today, honey is used more and more in the cosmetic industry to make face masks, moisturisers, lotions for the hair and body etcetera.
